After 10 Years Sober, Here's What Still Excites Me
It's the new guy and gal.
Dear Sober Friends,
A decade into sobriety, I've had a revelation that I want to share with you.
When I first started my recovery journey, I was convinced I'd be the last person to ever walk through those meeting room doors. Sure, I'd see familiar faces returning after relapse, but truly new people? I thought those days were over.
How wonderfully wrong I was. Over these past 10 years, I've witnessed a transformation in recovery culture that fills me with hope. Not only have I seen countless new faces, but I've watched some of these newcomers become my recovery heroes, showing me new depths of sobriety I still aspire to reach. Perhaps most encouraging is seeing younger generations embracing sobriety as part of their wellness journey.
I'll be honest - after ten years, the daily rhythms of recovery have become as routine as brushing my teeth. Meetings, step work, and quit lit don't generate the same spark they once did. But I've discovered something unexpected that reignites my passion: connecting with people just starting their journey.
Social media, particularly TikTok and Bluesky, has revolutionized how I experience recovery. Since launching this podcast in November 2020, these platforms have introduced me to fresh perspectives and new ways of connecting. I find myself drawn to the smaller accounts, the newest voices in recovery. There's something magical about witnessing someone's daily progress - subtle changes they might not notice, but I can see clearly. Every encouraging comment I leave not only supports their journey but enriches my own.
In this week's episode, I dive deeper into what keeps my recovery vibrant after all these years. Listen HERE
I'd love to hear from you: What keeps your recovery fresh and meaningful? Whether you're on day one or year twenty, your perspective matters to me.
With gratitude, Matt J
