In my recent Joe and Charlie Big Book study session, we explored the chapter "We Agnostics," and something caught my attention in a way it hadn't before. Charlie P. made a striking assertion: there are no true agnostics in AA because operating solely on self-will implies the absence of a higher power. This statement sparked considerable reflection.
The concept deserves deeper examination, particularly for those navigating their spiritual journey in recovery. In AA, we often hear that self-will alone cannot sustain sobriety, yet many newcomers and long-time members alike grapple with questions about higher power and spirituality.
I recently shared my thoughts on this topic in a TikTok video, examining this perspective through the lens of my own experience in recovery. While respecting the wisdom of AA's founders and trusted voices like Joe and Charlie, I believe it's essential to maintain an open dialogue about spirituality in recovery.
Each year I revisit these foundational teachings, I discover new insights that enhance my understanding of the program. This continuous learning process reminds me that recovery is not a destination but a journey of ongoing spiritual growth and discovery.
